A light pole should not enter production because an RFQ looks complete. Use the shop-drawing review to connect the agreed pole geometry, equipment interface, finish, supplied scope and open items to one controlled document revision.

This is a buyer and engineering-input guide. It does not establish structural capacity, foundation design, lighting design, installation method or project approval.

The short answer: review the supplied assembly, not an isolated drawing

A useful shop drawing gives every reviewer the same version of the proposed supply. It shows what is intended to be made and where the supplier interface ends. It should not hide missing luminaire data, a provisional bracket, an unconfirmed base condition or a finish that has not been accepted.

For light poles, geometry and interfaces travel together. A height callout affects the shaft; the shaft connects to a base or other installation concept; the top must match the luminaire or bracket direction; access details, finish and supplied accessories all need to remain on the same revision.

Application, quantity, pole geometry, shaft direction, top arrangement, base/interface and required accessories.

Interfaces

Luminaire, bracket or mast-arm status; access/handhole direction where applicable; cable entry and known installation interfaces.

Release control

What to put on the light pole shop-drawing checklist

The checklist is not a substitute for a project's own specification. It is a way to prevent a commercial RFQ from becoming an ambiguous production release. Use it with the latest drawings, equipment information and designated project review process.

Project referenceProject name or package reference, application, drawing list, quantity, location or pole schedule reference, and the document revision being reviewed.
Pole geometryOverall height direction, shaft/profile concept, pole-top arrangement, base-plate or other known interface, and any dimensions that form part of the supplied configuration.
Luminaire and bracket interfaceFixture model/data when available, bracket or mast-arm direction, mounting interface, orientation and items supplied by others. If not selected, mark the selection open.
Access and electrical interfaceHandhole/access-door direction where applicable, cable entry or route notes, grounding/control notes only as supplied project information, and responsibility for final electrical review.
Finish and appearanceMaterial/finish direction, color or surface reference, sample/approval route, handling expectations and any close-view condition that requires confirmation.
Commercial scope and releaseIncluded items, exclusions, packing/delivery assumptions, document revision, unresolved items, reviewers and the route to final production release.

Keep open items visible

The most expensive drawing error is often not a wrong dimension; it is an assumption that disappears from the paperwork. If the luminaire has not been selected, show it as open. If the site team has not confirmed base or cable information, show the interface as pending. If a surface reference still needs a sample, state that clearly.

A controlled open-items box gives the buyer, designer, contractor and supplier a common list. It supports concept pricing while protecting the final production release from scope drift. It also gives each responsible party a clear point at which to complete the applicable lighting, structural, electrical, civil, installation, maintenance, safety and authority checks.

Review dimensions by their interface

Do not review a dimension only because it appears on a drawing. Ask what it connects to. The overall pole direction relates to the project layout and lighting intent. A top connection relates to a luminaire or bracket. A base direction relates to the project civil and installation interface. An access opening relates to cable, maintenance and orientation requirements.

This approach keeps an RFQ practical. The supplier can prepare the proposed product configuration; designated project parties remain responsible for confirming requirements outside that supplied scope. A clear drawing helps the conversation, but it does not transfer project engineering responsibility.

Top interface

Check the luminaire, bracket or mast-arm arrangement, orientation and available equipment information before treating the drawing as final.

Shaft and access

Check profile direction, access/handhole location where relevant, finish direction and maintenance access against the site intent.

Base and site interface

Use latest project information for grade, base/foundation, cable entry and installation conditions; mark unknown items rather than assuming them.

A four-stage production-release sequence

The sequence below separates a preliminary quote from an approved supply configuration. It makes late changes easier to identify before material, fabrication or finish work begins.

1. RFQ and conceptShare the layout, quantity, pole direction, equipment status, finish reference, expected scope and known constraints. Mark unknowns.
2. Proposed shop drawingIssue one proposed configuration with the revision, interfaces, supplied scope, open-items list and references to available project documents.
3. Designated reviewResponsible project parties review through their required process and resolve or accept the configuration, equipment interface, site information and finish/sample route.
4. Production releaseRelease only the agreed revision with documented scope, approved changes and required project confirmations. Keep later changes under revision control.

Common drawing-review gaps

These are commercial and coordination gaps, not a replacement for a project's formal review procedure.

Product image used as equipment data

A visual reference can establish intent. It does not confirm a fixture model, mounting interface, electrical data or final geometry.

Finish stated only as a color

Add the material/surface direction, reference or sample route, exposure/handling notes and acceptance process.

Base assumed from a typical detail

Keep the project civil and installation interface visible. Do not treat a typical image as a final site instruction.

Revision not controlled

Put the drawing number and revision on the review package; record what changed and which open items remain before release.
