Light Pole Hand Holes and Access Doors: What to Specify Before RFQ
A hand hole or access door is not a minor afterthought. It affects cable access, the visible pole face, maintenance expectations and the drawing questions that should be settled before production.
This article is a buyer checklist. Final opening dimensions, placement and reinforcement remain project-specific.

Why the access detail belongs in the RFQ
The opening near the lower pole section is where installers and maintenance teams reach cable connections, grounding points and internal components. Leaving it undefined can create late questions about the visible pole face, conduit direction, cover style, locking expectation and working access.
FHWA has documented a field case where loose or missing hand-hole covers allowed moisture, salt spray and debris to enter poles. That is not a universal failure rule for every material or location, but it is a useful reminder that access details should match the environment and maintenance plan.
For the buyer
State the known cable route, mounting face, access preference and final drawing requirement.
For the installer
Confirm conduit direction, pulling access, grounding approach and any local electrical coordination.
For the drawing review
Keep the opening, cover, reinforcement and base relationship visible rather than implied.
Hand hole, access door and ground handhole are different things
In light-pole conversations, hand hole often means the opening in the pole shaft with a removable or fitted cover. An access door is commonly used for the same visible feature in buyer specifications. A ground handhole or pull box is a separate underground access point for conduit and cable work.
Use the project drawing or local specification to define the term. A quotation should not assume that a request for a hand hole means an underground box, or that a ground handhole removes the need for pole-shaft cable access.

Six details to state before quotation
A complete preliminary RFQ can still contain open items. The useful move is to mark them clearly.
1. Location and face
Reference the opening from the base and note the preferred pole face or orientation to the roadway, footpath or equipment.
2. Opening and cover
Give a drawing, approximate opening requirement, fitted cover preference and any security or fastener expectation.
3. Cable and conduit route
Describe conduit entry, cable direction, pulling access and whether the route is known or still under civil/electrical review.
4. Grounding and terminals
State any known grounding-lug, terminal, earthing or utility-interface requirement; do not infer local rules from another project.
5. Material and finish
Identify stainless steel or aluminum alloy direction, brushing, anodizing, powder coating, titanium plating or other finish expectation.
6. Drawing stage
Say whether you need a budgetary quote, a review drawing or a final production drawing after the site inputs are confirmed.
Location is an example, not a universal dimension
A published FHWA eligibility letter describes one tested pole with a handhole centered 1 foot 6 inches from the base. Treat that as an example of how a pole detail can be documented, not as a default dimension for your project.
The appropriate access position depends on the pole geometry, base detail, cable path, access side, structural configuration, local requirements and the final equipment schedule. Ask for the location to be shown on the applicable drawing.

Product-family context
The access-detail conversation changes with the application. Roadway poles may focus on arm and luminaire cable routing. Garden poles may need a cleaner visible cover and finish match. Multifunctional poles can add device schedules and multiple cable paths.
Use a product family to start the conversation, then attach the access-detail notes to the actual project configuration.
